What a khatm actually involves
A khatm is a complete recitation of the Qur'an from Surah al-Fatiha to Surah an-Nas. The Madinah mushaf, printed by the King Fahd Complex and by far the most widely distributed edition in the Muslim world, is exactly 604 pages divided into 30 juz. Most khatm plans use this standardisation: for a 30-day Ramadan khatm, one juz per day works out to almost exactly 20 pages a day.
Popular plans
- Ramadan (30 days). One juz per day. Traditional pace. Roughly 45 minutes of tartil recitation per day.
- Half-Ramadan (15 days). Two juz per day. Advanced pace. Popular among huffaz.
- Two months (60 days). Half a juz per day. Steady, sustainable.
- Yearly (365 days). Just under two pages a day. About 4 minutes. Excellent for building a habit.
How to make it stick
Time-box, do not page-count. If you commit to "from after Fajr for 20 minutes," the pages will happen. If you commit to "20 pages," you will skip a day, then two, then reset the whole plan in guilt. Ten minutes every day beats an hour every Sunday.
Pair recitation with dhikr in the same sitting: a short wird before or after your recitation is the traditional method. Sibha's counter can hold your dhikr count in the same session.
