Salawat on the Prophet
Salawat (durood) is asking Allah to honour, bless, and grant peace to the Prophet Muhammad, upon him be peace. It is one of the shortest routes to closeness.
The basic form
The shortest complete salawat, and the one people whisper thousands of times a day:
Allahumma salli ‘ala Muhammadin wa ‘ala ali Muhammad.
O Allah, honour Muhammad and the family of Muhammad.
Durood Ibrahim (the full form)
This is what the Prophet taught when the companions asked him "how do we send salawat on you?" It is the exact form we recite in the final sitting of every prayer.
O Allah, honour Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You honoured Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim. Indeed You are Praiseworthy and Glorious. O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You blessed Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim. Indeed You are Praiseworthy and Glorious.
Sahih al-Bukhari 3370, Sahih Muslim 405
Whoever sends one salawat upon me, Allah sends ten upon him.
When to send salawat
- In every tashahhud of every prayer.
- Every time the Prophet's name is mentioned.
- On Fridays. The Prophet said to increase salawat on him on Jumu‘ah in particular.
- At the start and end of every du’a. Umar said "du’a is stopped between heaven and earth. None of it rises until you send salawat on your Prophet."
- As your default remembrance. Ubayy ibn Ka‘b once asked "shall I make all my du’a for you?" The Prophet said "then your concerns are removed and your sins forgiven."
How many times
There is no capped number. Scholars historically recommend 100, 300, or 1000 salawat a day depending on capacity. The clean starting habit: 100 after Fajr, 100 after Maghrib. If that is too much, start with 10 after every prayer. Use a counter so you do not have to keep score in your head.
Common variants
South Asian tradition includes longer expansions like Durood-e-Taj and Durood-e-Akbar. These are not from the Prophet directly; they are later compilations of praise. There is no harm in reading them, but scholars are unanimous that the strongest and most reliable form is Durood Ibrahim above.
