Dhikr after salah

The exact remembrances the Prophet made after every fard prayer, in the order he said them, with the counts and the hadith for each.

Rushing out after the tasleem is the modern habit. The Prophet, upon him be peace, stayed. He turned to face the people, made specific remembrances, and only then left. The companions preserved the order and the counts. What follows is that order.

The order, step by step

  1. Step 1

    أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ

    Astaghfirullah

    I seek Allah's forgiveness.

    Sahih Muslim 591

  2. Step 2

O Allah, You are Peace and from You is Peace. Blessed are You, Owner of Majesty and Honor.

    Sahih Muslim 591

  3. Step 3

    آيَةُ الْكُرْسِيّ

    Ayatul Kursi

    Recite Ayatul Kursi (Quran 2:255).

Sunan an-Nasa'i 9928. Whoever reads it after every prayer, nothing keeps them from Paradise except death.

  4. Step 4

1× each (3× after Fajr and Maghrib)

    قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ / قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ / قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ

    Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas

The three qul surahs, once each.

    Sunan Abi Dawud 1523

  5. Step 5

    33×

    سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ

    SubhanAllah

    Glory to Allah.

    Sahih Muslim 596

  6. Step 6

    33×

    الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ

    Alhamdulillah

    Praise be to Allah.

    Sahih Muslim 596

  7. Step 7

    34×

    اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ

    Allahu Akbar

    Allah is the Greatest.

    Sahih Muslim 596

  8. Step 8

1× (10× after Fajr and Maghrib)

None has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone with no partner. To Him belongs dominion and praise, and He is over all things capable.

    Sahih Muslim 596

Whoever glorifies Allah 33 times, praises Him 33 times, and magnifies Him 34 times after every prayer, their sins are forgiven though they be like the foam of the sea.
Sahih Muslim 596

Use the counter to keep the tally

The 33-33-34 sequence is exactly what the counter's Tasbih Fatimah mode is built for. It moves to the next phrase automatically at each milestone, so your eyes stay closed and your hands stay still.

Why it matters

The prayer is the pillar. The adhkar after it are the ropes that tie the pillar to the day. Without them, the connection ends when the salam does. With them, the state of prayer stretches into your walking, your driving, your work. The Prophet did not treat these as optional decorations. He treated them as part of leaving well.

Frequently asked questions

What is the order of dhikr after salah?

Astaghfirullah 3x, then the peace formula (Allahumma anta as-salam), Ayatul Kursi, then 33 SubhanAllah, 33 Alhamdulillah, 34 Allahu Akbar, then the tahlil. After Fajr and Maghrib, add the three qul surahs 3x each and the tahlil 10x.

How many times SubhanAllah after salah?

33 times SubhanAllah, 33 Alhamdulillah, 34 Allahu Akbar. Total 100. The Prophet said whoever does this after every prayer has their sins forgiven though they be like the foam of the sea.

Can I do the tasbih on my fingers?

Yes. The Prophet used his right hand. The joints of the fingers give exactly 30 counts (10 tips + 10 middle + 10 base) which is why some people use both hands. A physical or digital tasbih is equally valid.

Do I have to do adhkar after every prayer or just once a day?

After every fard prayer. Five times. This is the consistent practice reported in Sahih Muslim 596 and elsewhere. Sunnah prayers do not have the same set.

What if I forget or run out of time?

Do what you can. Even three astaghfirullah and the peace formula is enough as the minimum. The full set is the goal, not a rigid requirement.
