Astaghfirullah meaning

أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ · Astaghfiru‑llāh · I seek forgiveness from Allah.

How do you pronounce astaghfirullah?

Say ass-TAGH-fi-ru-LLAAH. Five syllables, main stress on TAGH, a second beat of stress on the final LLAAH, and the opening as- kept light and quick.

The gh is the Arabic letter غ, made at the back of the throat, closest to a Parisian French r or to a soft gargle. It is not a hard g. The ending holds a doubled l and a long vowel: lLAAH, not lah, with the final h breathed out.

At an ordinary dhikr pace the whole phrase takes under a second. Said carefully, about a second and a half.

What does stafallah mean?

Stafallah is the fast, run-together spoken form of astaghfirullah, written down by ear. It means the same thing: "I seek forgiveness from Allah".

The same phrase is also typed as astagfirullah, stagfirullah, astafirullah and estaghfirullah. All of them are أستغفر الله, and none of them is a separate expression.

Astaghfirullah word by word

The gloss above is the whole phrase. This is what each part of the Arabic is doing, which is usually what people mean when they ask what Astaghfirullah means literally.

أَسْتَغْفِرُastaghfiru
I seek covering, I ask forgiveness. First person, present tense, from the root gh-f-r.
اللَّهَAllāh
Allah, in the accusative: the one being asked.

When to say Astaghfirullah

  • After a slip, a harsh word, or a lapse in attention.
  • As continual dhikr through the day, especially the last third of the night.
  • After every prescribed prayer, three times, before the post-salah adhkar.
  • During moments of anger or worry, to steady the heart.

When Astaghfirullah is not the right phrase

  • As a substitute for putting a wrong right. Istighfar with a right still owed to someone is incomplete.
  • As a reaction phrase for something merely surprising. That is subhanallah.
Continual istighfar is praised across the Quran (e.g. Surah Nuh 71:10-12) and the Sunnah. The Prophet Muhammad, upon him be peace, is reported to have said istighfar more than seventy times a day (Sahih al-Bukhari 6307).

ass-TAGH-fi-ru-LLAAH, with a gargled gh in the middle and a long, heavy final laah.

  • gh (غ). Not a hard g. It is made at the back of the throat, closest to a Parisian French r or the sound of gargling. English speakers who cannot make it yet should aim for a soft, voiced rasp rather than a clean g.
  • The final llah. The double l is held, and the vowel before the final h is long. Say lLAAH, not lah. The h at the end is breathed out, not silent.
  • Stress. Main stress falls on TAGH, secondary stress on the final LAAH. The opening as- is light and quick.

About one and a half seconds said carefully, under a second at dhikr pace.

Spellings people type for Astaghfirullah

  • stafallah. A phonetic guess at the fast, run-together spoken form. It is the same phrase, heard rather than read.
  • estaghfirullah. Reflects a common Levantine and Turkish pronunciation of the opening vowel. Same word.
  • astaghfirullah al azeem. Not a misspelling but the longer form, أستغفر الله العظيم, adding "the Magnificent".

What does astaghfirullah mean in English?

It means "I seek forgiveness from Allah." It is a short act of dhikr acknowledging a mistake and turning back.

How many times should I say astaghfirullah?

There is no fixed cap. A common practice is 100 times a day, and 3 times immediately after every prescribed prayer.

Is it astaghfirullah or astagfirullah?

Both spellings appear in English writing for the same Arabic word, أستغفر الله. Astaghfirullah is closer to the Arabic, since the letter غ is transliterated gh. Astagfirullah, astaghfirullah al-azeem and estaghfirullah all refer to the same phrase.

What does astaghfirullah rabbi min kulli zambin wa atubu ilaih mean?

It means "I seek forgiveness from Allah, my Lord, from every sin, and I turn to Him in repentance." It is a longer, widely recited form of istighfar that adds both the scope of the request and the intention to return to Allah.

What is astaghfirullah al-azeem?

It is the extended form أستغفر الله العظيم, "I seek forgiveness from Allah, the Magnificent." Adding al-azeem names an attribute of Allah alongside the request; the meaning of the istighfar itself is unchanged.

Can non-Muslims say astaghfirullah?

The phrase is Arabic prayer language. Muslims use it as an act of worship. Non-Muslims quoting or discussing it in study is fine; using it as personal worship is not typically expected outside the tradition.

Istighfar is asking to be shielded from a wrong. Tawbah is the full turn back, including regret, stopping, and resolve. Istighfar is the verbal side of tawbah.

What is Sayyidul Istighfar?

The "master of seeking forgiveness": a longer supplication taught by the Prophet, promised the reward of Paradise for whoever says it sincerely morning and evening. See the dedicated page.
