Salatul Tasbih
A four-rakah prayer with 75 tasbih in each rakah. Total 300. Taught by the Prophet, upon him be peace, to his uncle al-`Abbas, as a means to be forgiven for sins.
The tasbih phrase
سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ وَلَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَاللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ
SubḥānAllāh, wa‑l-ḥamdu li‑llāh, wa lā ilāha illa‑llāh, wa‑llāhu akbar.
Meaning: Glory be to Allah, all praise is due to Allah, there is no god except Allah, Allah is the greatest.
How to count 75 per rakah
The 75 tasbih inside a single rakah are split across 7 positions:
- Standing, after Fatiha and surah: 15 tasbih
- In ruku` (after the usual tasbih of ruku`): 10
- Standing after ruku` (after rabbana laka al-hamd): 10
- First sujud (after the usual tasbih of sujud): 10
- Sitting between the two sujuds: 10
- Second sujud: 10
- Sitting after the second sujud, before standing: 10
Total 75. Repeat for each of the four rakahs. Total 300.
The reported promise, and the dispute around it
In the narration of Sunan Abi Dawud 1297, the Prophet, upon him be peace, told al-`Abbas that if he prayed Salatul Tasbih, Allah would forgive his first and last sin, old and new, deliberate and accidental, secret and open, minor and major.
Frequently asked
When can I pray Salatul Tasbih?
At any permitted time outside the disliked times for optional prayer (right after Fajr until sunrise is complete, at zawal, right after Asr until sunset). A common time is late night before witr.
Is Salatul Tasbih obligatory?
No. It is an optional (nafl) prayer, and scholars differ on whether it is recommended at all, because the hadith behind it is disputed. Nobody holds it to be required.
Can I pray it in congregation?
Best prayed individually. Some schools allow it in a small group; the base practice is solo.
What if I lose count?
Estimate to the best of your ability and continue. The prayer is not invalidated. A digital counter makes this rarely necessary.
