Dua for overthinking

A racing mind is a form of hardship. The Prophet ﷺ taught specific words for exactly this state. Say them, repeat them, and let the words do the work your thinking cannot.

The six duas in full

Allahumma inni a`udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazan, wal-`ajzi wal-kasal, wal-bukhli wal-jubn, wa dala`id-dayni wa ghalabatir-rijal

Meaning. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and grief, from weakness and laziness, from stinginess and cowardice, from the burden of debt and being overpowered by others.

Source. Sahih al-Bukhari 6369. The Prophet ﷺ taught this to Anas as a morning and evening dua.

When. Twice a day. This is the flagship dua for a mind that will not settle.

Hasbunallahu wa ni`mal wakil

Meaning. Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best disposer of affairs.

Source. Surah Al-Imran 3:173.

When. When the spiral starts. Repeat until the chest opens.

La ilaha illa anta subhanaka inni kuntu minaz-zalimin

Meaning. There is no god but You. Glory to You. Truly I have been of the wrongdoers.

Source. Surah al-Anbiya 21:87. The dua of Yunus (peace be upon him) from inside the whale.

When. When you feel stuck inside your own head. Allah promised: whoever calls with this is answered.

Meaning. O Allah, I hope for Your mercy. Do not leave me to myself for the blink of an eye. Rectify all my affairs. There is no god but You.

Source. Sunan Abi Dawud 5090, hasan.

When. When your own thoughts feel like the enemy. Ask to be lifted out of your own head.

A`udhu bi kalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq

Meaning. I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He created.

Source. Sahih Muslim 2708.

When. For intrusive thoughts and waswas. Say three times.

Meaning. O Ever-Living, O Sustainer, by Your mercy I seek help. Rectify all my affairs, and do not leave me to myself for the blink of an eye.

Source. Sunan an-Nasa'i, al-Sunan al-Kubra 10405, hasan.

When. For grief, distress, and the 3am mind. Two of Allah's names paired with total surrender.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my mind race even when I do dhikr?

Because dhikr is a practice, not a switch. The first few minutes often feel loud. Keep going. The Quran promises: 'In the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest' (13:28), not 'in the first minute of it'.

Is overthinking a sin?

The thoughts themselves are not sins; acting on them or believing them is what counts. Waswas (intrusive whispers) is a known trial and the Prophet ﷺ gave specific duas for it.

How many times should I repeat these?

There is no fixed count for most. Repeat until the heart settles. The dua of Yunus and Hasbunallah are especially suited to repetition; the tasbih counter helps you stop counting and start feeling.
