How many beads are in a tasbih?
Traditional tasbih beads come in three counts: 33, 99, and 100. Each has a reason. Here is which to pick and how to use it.
Why 33?
Because of a single hadith. The Prophet ﷺ taught his daughter Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) to say SubhanAllah 33 times, Alhamdulillah 33 times, and Allahu Akbar 34 times after every prescribed prayer. That is 100 in total. The 33-bead tasbih is built around this practice (Sahih Muslim 596, Sahih al-Bukhari 3705).
Why 99?
Because of the 99 Names of Allah. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Allah has 99 names, 100 minus one. Whoever preserves them will enter Paradise" (Sahih al-Bukhari 2736, Sahih Muslim 2677). A 99-bead tasbih lets you go through the names one at a time. It is also popular for general use because 99 divides neatly into three sets of 33, so you can complete Tasbih Fatimah on it too.
Why 100?
Because of hadiths like this one: "Whoever says SubhanAllahi wa bihamdih 100 times a day will have his sins forgiven, even if they were like the foam of the sea" (Sahih al-Bukhari 6405, Sahih Muslim 2691). A 100-bead tasbih is purpose-built for that.
What the beads are made of
- Wooden (olive, sandalwood, tamarind): traditional, warm, silent. Sandalwood ages well.
- Bone or horn: old-school, popular in North Africa.
- Sulaimani agate (aqeeq): often associated with Yemen and with Shia practice, permissible for anyone.
- Plastic or acrylic: lightweight, cheap, fine to use. Beads are a tool.
Fingers vs beads vs digital
The Prophet ﷺ counted on his fingers and said his fingers would be asked to testify on the Day of Judgment (Sunan Abi Dawud 1502, hasan). This is why some scholars prefer fingers over beads. The majority of classical scholars allowed beads as a permissible aid. Digital counters are the modern extension of that ruling: same neutral tool, easier to use one-handed while walking or in bed.
Which one should you buy?
- Just starting? A 33-bead is easiest. You cannot lose your place during Tasbih Fatimah.
- Want one string for everything? Get a 99 with two dividers at bead 33 and 66.
- Doing morning and evening 100x dhikr? Get a 100-bead.
- Want zero maintenance? Use the counter on this site or your fingers.
Frequently asked questions
Is a 99-bead tasbih better than a 33?
Not better, just different. 99 gives you more flexibility for the Names of Allah and long dhikr sessions. 33 keeps Tasbih Fatimah simple.
Can I use worry beads or mala beads for dhikr?
The Islamic ruling is about the words, not the material of the beads. Any bead string that helps you count is fine, but the aesthetic and cultural associations of non-Islamic beads may not sit well with everyone.
Do I lose reward for using a counter instead of my fingers?
No. Scholarly consensus is that beads and counters are permissible aids. Fingers are the Sunnah preference, but the words are what earn reward, not the counting method.
How many beads did the Prophet ﷺ use?
Zero. He counted on his fingers. Beads came into common use after his time and were accepted by the majority of scholars as a permitted innovation.
