What is the difference between dhikr and dua?
Dhikr is remembering Allah using set phrases (SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illa Allah, Astaghfirullah). Dua is asking Allah for something, in Arabic or your own language. Every dua contains dhikr (you praise before you ask), but not every dhikr is a dua.

Dhikr focuses on Allah's names and attributes. It changes you by reminding you who Allah is.
Dua focuses on your need. It changes your situation by asking the One who can change it.
The prophetic pattern is: begin with praise (dhikr), send salawat on the Prophet ﷺ, then ask (dua). This is why formal duas often open with hamd.
A tasbih counter fits dhikr well because dhikr is repetitive by design. Dua is usually not counted; it is felt.
