Dua after eating

The short form is alhamdulillah. The Prophet, upon him be peace, also taught longer wordings for after a meal, for the host, and for whoever gave you drink.

The shortest valid dua after eating is one word: alhamdulillah, all praise is due to Allah. The Prophet said Allah is pleased with a servant who eats a meal and praises Him for it, and who drinks and praises Him for it (Sahih Muslim 2734).

Two longer wordings are widely reported and both are given in full below. One thanks Allah for the food and for Islam; the other names the fact that the food came without effort or power of your own. There is also a dua the guest says for the host, and the fallback for a bismillah you forgot at the start of the meal.

Frequently asked

What is the dua after eating?

Alhamdulillah. The full sunnah wording is alhamdulillahi-lladhi at'amana wa saqana wa ja'alana muslimin: all praise is due to Allah, who fed us and gave us drink and made us Muslims. Reported in Sunan Abi Dawud 3850.

Is saying alhamdulillah alone enough after a meal?

Yes. Sahih Muslim 2734 records that Allah is pleased with a servant who eats and praises Him for it. The longer wordings add to that; they do not replace a requirement.

What if I forgot to say bismillah before eating?

Say bismillahi awwalahu wa akhirah, in the name of Allah at its beginning and its end, as soon as you remember. Sunan Abi Dawud 3767.

What do you say after drinking water?

Alhamdulillah. The Prophet praised Allah after drinking as after eating, in the same report in Sahih Muslim 2734.

Is there a dua for the person who cooked or paid for the meal?

Yes. A guest says afthara 'indakumu-s-sa'imun, wa akala ta'amakumu-l-abrar, wa sallat 'alaykumu-l-mala'ikah (Sunan Abi Dawud 3854), or simply jazakallahu khayran.
