A tally counter is the handheld device with a thumb lever and a number wheel, used to count people, stock, laps and anything else that passes by one at a time. This is the same thing in your browser: tap or click to add one, undo if you slip, and reset when you are done. It costs nothing, needs no account, and keeps the count on your own device.
A tally counter is used anywhere a person needs an exact count of things arriving one at a time and cannot afford to lose their place. Door staff count people entering a venue, warehouse staff count stock, coaches count laps and repetitions, wildlife surveyors count birds, stewards count crowds, and worshippers count recitations.
The tool matters because counting in your head fails the moment somebody speaks to you. A counter holds the number for you so an interruption costs nothing.
A mechanical tally counter uses a set of geared number wheels. Each press of the lever advances the units wheel by one, and when it passes nine it turns the tens wheel by one, and so on. A knob on the side turns all the wheels back to zero at once.
A digital tally counter does the same arithmetic in software, which is why it can also undo a press, remember your total after you close the tab and count past 9999.
For most uses it is more reliable. A metal counter can be knocked in a pocket and add counts you did not make, and it cannot undo a double press. A browser counter records only deliberate presses, offers undo, and keeps the number if you lock the phone. The one thing metal wins on is that it never runs out of battery.
